Admiral Edward Harpur Gamble, C.B., Royal Navy (6 September, 1849 – 17 November, 1925) was an officer of the Royal Navy.

Life & Career

Gamble was educated at the Royal Naval School, New Cross.[1]

Gamble was promoted to the rank of Lieutenant with seniority of 3 September, 1872.[2]

Gamble was promoted to the rank of Commander on 31 December, 1884.[3]

Gamble commanded the torpedo cruiser Racoon in the Annual Manoeuvres of 1890. His ship acted as part of Fleet Number 1 which was itself playing the role of the Royal Navy fending off attacks on British trade routes.[4]

Gamble was promoted to the rank of Captain on 30 June, 1891.[5] He was appointed in command of the screw frigate Raleigh on 4 May, 1892. On 8 December 1894, he left Raleigh and he was appointed in command of the new first class protected cruiser St. George the following day.[6]

He assumed command of the first class protected cruiser Endymion in mid January 1896, remaining with her until the end of June. In mid September, he was appointed as Captain of the second class protected cruiser Talbot.

He was appointed in command of the battleship Cæsar on 14 April, 1899.[7]

Gamble was appointed an Ordinary Member of the Third Class, or Companion, in the Military Division of the Order of the Bath (C.B.) on 26 June, 1902.[8]

Flag Rank

Gamble succeeded Rear-Admiral Robinson in command of the Devonport Reserve Division on 3 January, 1906.[9] He was relieved on 3 January, 1907 by Rear-Admiral Harry S. F. Niblett.[10] He was promoted to the rank of Vice-Admiral on 11 April, 1908, vice Drury.[11]

He was promoted to the rank of Admiral on 18 September, 1911, vice Robinson, and, in accordance with the provisions of the Order in Council of 8 December, 1903, was placed on the Retired List on 19 September.[12]
