Admiral SIR Alfred Leigh Winsloe, K.C.B., C.M.G., C.V.O., Royal Navy (25 April, 1852 – 16 February, 1931), known in his later career as Leigh Winsloe, was an officer of the Royal Navy.

Early Life & Career

On 3 September, 1880, Winsloe was appointed to the Inconstant as Flag Lieutenant to Rear-Admiral The Earl of Clanwilliam, commanding the Detached Squadron for Particular Service.[1]

Winsloe was appointed to command H.M.S. Helicon on 15 August, 1882, remaining there until 30 June, 1885[2] when he was promoted to the rank of Commander.[3]

He was promoted to the rank of Captain on 30 June, 1892.[4]

In 1893, Colomb reported that Winsloe was under the impression during the court-martial that people in Valletta had crossed the street in order to avoid him.[5] By his own account he was "quite played out" after "such an unpleasant duty" and [rather presumptuously] felt that he deserved to be given command of a second-class cruiser.[6]

In April 1898, however, he was placed in command of the new first class protected cruiser Niobe, a unit of the Channel Squadron. The cruiser was the scene of "a daring robbery" in January 1899 when the paymaster's cabin was entered and "a large sum of money" was taken from the safe.[7]

On 5 October, 1900, Winsloe was appointed Commodore, Second Class in command of the Training Squadron.[8]

Following the voyage of the Ophir, he was appointed an Ordinary Member of the Third Class, or Companion, of the Most Distinguished Order of Saint Michael and Saint George (C.M.G.) on 9 November, 1901,[9] and a Commander of the Royal Victorian Order (C.V.O.) on 24 December.[10]

Appointed to command battleship Russell on 19 February, 1903.[11]

Appointed to command battleship Queen on 7 April, 1904.[12]

Flag Rank

Winsloe was promoted to the rank of Rear-Admiral on 26 November, 1904, vice Pattisson.[13] He officially gave up command of Queen on 8 December. He hoisted his flag in command of the Home Fleet Torpedo and Submarine Flotillas on 1 February, 1905.[14] He hauled down his flag on 1 January, 1907 and was replaced by Rear-Admiral Robert A. J. Montgomerie.[15]

He was promoted to the rank of Vice-Admiral on 5 November, 1908, vice Atkinson-Willes.[16]

On the occasion of the King's birthday Winsloe was appointed an Ordinary Member of the Second Class, or Knight Commander, in the Military Division of the Most Honourable Order of the Bath (K.C.B.) on 25 June, 1909.[17]

Winsloe was promoted to the rank of Admiral on 20 September, 1912, vice Custance.[18] In accordance with the provisions of the Order in Council of 8 December, 1903, he was placed on the Retired List, at his own request, on 13 December, 1913.[19]
