'''Chief Naval Instructor''' was a rank in the Royal Navy ranking with {{CaptRN}}s of 3 years' seniority. It was instituted by Order-in-Council on [[8 August]], [[1917]]. Pay was established at £1 15s. 0d., and half pay at 17s. 6d. per day. The number of Chief Naval Instructors was limited to four, and a mandatory retirement age of 60 imposed. The rank was intended to be temporary, as to fill any vacancies once the limit had been reached would require the Treasury's consent.
