Chief Naval Instructor was a rank in the Royal Navy ranking with Captains of 3 years' seniority. It was instituted by Order-in-Council on 8 August, 1917. Pay was established at £1 15s. 0d., and half pay at 17s. 6d. per day. The number of Chief Naval Instructors was limited to four, and a mandatory retirement age of 60 imposed. The rank was intended to be temporary, as to fill any vacancies once the limit had been reached would require the Treasury's consent.

The rank was renamed Instructor Captain in 1918.
