Construction
Purchased from the Ward Line by the U.S. Navy on 19 April, 1898 and renamed Badger.[8]
Service
Badger was commissioned on 22 April, 1898, with Commander Albert S. Snow in command.
Transferred to the War Department on 7 April, 1900 and renamed Lawton, she was returned to the Navy on 12 November, 1902. Retaining the name Lawton, she served as a transport until stricken again on 24 April, 1907.[9]
