Vice-Admiral Stuart Sumner Bonham-Carter, C.V.O., D.S.O., C.B., Royal Navy (9 July, 1889 – ) was an officer in the Royal Navy.

Life & Career

Bonham-Carter was born in Portsmouth.[1]

Bonham-Carter was promoted to the rank of Lieutenant on 1 April, 1911.[2]

Great War

On 12 October, 1914, Bonham-Carter was appointed to the battleship Emperor of India, in which his duties eventually found him a turret officer, as Captain Royds was to remark that the young Lieutenant was good at the job. He left the ship on 13 February, 1918.[3]

Bonham-Carter was appointed Lieutenant in Command of the destroyer Shark on 8 June, 1918,[4] remaining in command until 4 April, 1919.[5]

Post-War

Bonham-Carter was promoted to the rank of Lieutenant-Commander on 1 April, 1919.[6]

He was appointed in command of the minesweeper Petersfield on 11 November, 1919.

Bonham-Carter was promoted to the rank of Commander on 30 June, 1921.[7]

He was appointed as executive officer in Delhi on 7 August, 1922 and remained in her until 6 January, 1925.[8]

Bonham-Carter was promoted to the rank of Captain on 31 December, 1927.[9]

On 11 January, 1929, Bonham-Carter was appointed in command of the light cruiser Calcutta, to be Flag Captain to Rear Admiral Burmester upon his hoisting his flag in her, which he did in February. Bonham-Carter was superseded in Calcutta on 24 April, 1931.[10]

On 22 March, 1933, he married the widow Eva Robertson Lloyd.[11]

Bonham-Carter was promoted to the rank of Rear-Admiral on 10 January, 1939.[12]

World War II

Bonham-Carter was appointed Rear-Admiral Commanding, Eighteenth Cruiser Squadron in early 1942. He was promoted to the rank of Vice-Admiral on 15 June, 1942 and re-appointed in command of 18 C.S.. When he lowered his flag in September, the formation ceased to exist.[13]

At the end of 1942, he suffered a hospitalisation due to sciatica. He was declared fit for general service in August, 1943.[14]
