Admiral Seymour Elphinstone Erskine, C.B., Royal Navy, Retired (23 June, 1863 – 23 February, 1945) was an officer of the Royal Navy.

Life & Career

He came nineteenth in order of merit out of forty-two candidates who passed the examination for naval cadetships.[1]

For his services with the Nile Expeditionary Force, Erskine was specially promoted to the rank of Lieutenant on 19 September, 1885.[2]

For his services in Benin, Erskine was specially promoted to the rank of Commander on 25 May, 1897.[3]

On 31 December, 1902 he was promoted to the rank of Captain.[4] He was appointed in command of the Warrior, depôt ship at Portsmouth, on 30 August, 1903.[5] On 12 January, 1907, he was appointed in command of the armoured cruiser Bedford.

Erskine was appointed to Pembroke as Commodore, Second Class for command of the Royal Naval Barracks, Chatham on 1 August, 1911.[6] He was promoted to the rank of Rear-Admiral on 21 March, 1913, vice Galloway.[7]

Great War

He was placed on the Retired List on 12 August, 1915, to take up the appointment of Rear-Admiral, Royal Naval Barracks, Chatham.[8]

Erskine was advanced to the rank of Vice-Admiral on the Retired List on 30 January, 1918.[9] On the occasion of the King's birthday he was appointed an Additional Member of the Third Class, or Companion, in the Military Division of the Most Honourable Order of the Bath (C.B.) on 3 June.[10]

He was advanced to the rank of Admiral on the Retired List on 5 July, 1921.[11]
