Lieutenant R.N.R. (temporary) Rudolph Lancelot Wikner, D.S.C. (23 September, 1886 – 21 January, 1973)[1] served in the Royal Naval Reserve.

Life & Career

Wikner came from Bridlington. On 14 September 1914 he was appointed to the Cromarty Minesweeping Flotilla as a Temporary Sub-Lieutenant R.N.R..[2]

Wikner was promoted to the rank of Lieutenant R.N.R. on 14 January, 1915. On the 19th, he was appointed to the trawler Stephen Furness.[3]

He served in Thalia from 9 March to 1 December 1916.[4]

He was awarded the Distinguished Service Cross on 1 January, 1917, "in recognition of [his] bravery and devotion to duty during mine-sweeping operations" during the first six months of 1916.[5]

Wikner was appointed to H.M.S. Gunner on 27 January, 1917 to do duty in Cotswold, and was appointed in command of Cotswold on commissioning, on 24 February, 1917. On 4 April 1918 he was again appointed to H.M.S. Gunner, additional, for Garth, in command.[6]

Wikner was demobilised on 24 October 1919. He was evaluated as "above average", a "good officer but little lacking in knowledge of the service."[7]
