Admiral Robert Hathorn Johnston Stewart, C.B., M.V.O., Royal Navy, Retired (20 May, 1858 – 23 May, 1940) was an officer of the Royal Navy.

Life & Career

He was promoted to the rank of Lieutenant on 15 February, 1882.[1]

Johnston Stewart was promoted to the rank of Commander on 31 December, 1895.[2]

Captain

He assumed command of the first class protected cruiser Gibraltar in December 1904.[3]

Johnston Stewart was appointed to command of the armoured cruiser Monmouth on 8 August, 1905.[4]

He served as captain of Goliath from October 1906 until the following December,[5] when he moved to Africa until June 1908.[6]

He was appointed Captain Superintendent of Sheerness Dockyard on 1 July, 1908.[7]

He was promoted to the rank of Rear-Admiral dated 8 September, 1909, vice Marx.[8]

On the occasion of King George V's coronation he was appointed an Additional Member of the Third Class, or Companion, in the Military Division of the Most Honourable Order of the Bath (C.B.) on 19 June, 1911.[9]

In accordance with the provisions of the Order in Council of 8 December, 1903, he was placed on the Retired List, at his own request, dated 9 July, 1912.[10] He was advanced to the rank of Vice-Admiral on the Retired List on 15 July, 1915,[11] and to the rank of Admiral on the Retired List on 1 September, 1918.[12]
