Life & Career

The son of Colonel C. W. Thompson of the 7th Dragoon Guards entered the Training Establishment on 15 May 1905.[1]

When the war began, Thompson was serving in the second class protected cruiser Astræa on the Cape. He was promoted to the rank of Lieutenant in the ship on 15 April, 1915 and continued to serve in her until being recalled to England in June 1916.[2]

Destroyer service followed: one month in the "C" and "D" Class destroyer Defender and then fourteen months in Norseman, ending on the last day of 1917.[3]

Thompson was then appointed to his first command, the patrol boat P45, dated 28 January, 1918. He would serve in the ship through the end of the war.[4]

Thompson was promoted to the rank of Lieutenant-Commander on 15 April, 1923.[5]

Thompson was placed on the Retired List at his own request at the rank of Commander on 31 August, 1935.[6]
