Lieutenant John Coughlan, R.N. (12 February, 1851 – 22 July, 1909) served in the Royal Navy.

Life & Career

Coughlan was promoted to the rank of Boatswain on 8 September, 1877.

Coughlan was promoted to the rank of Chief Boatswain on 1 April, 1896.

Coughlan was promoted to the rank of Lieutenant on 1 April, 1903.

Coughlan was appointed in command of the flatiron gunboat Tay on 10 March, 1904. In June of that year, Tay collided with a smack. A Court of Enquiry found a "want of judgment." Having been diagnosed with neurasthenia at Plymouth Hospital, Coughlan was retired as unfit on 20 September, 1904.
