Vice-Admiral (retired) John Coke Burnell, R.N. (27 December, 1842 – 22 February, 1928) was an officer in the Royal Navy.

Early Life & Career

Burnell was promoted to the rank of Lieutenant on 9 November, 1864.[1]

Burnell was promoted to the rank of Commander on 9 August, 1877.[2]

Burnell was promoted to the rank of Captain on 31 December, 1883.[3]

Burnell was appointed to Asia, additional, for service in Camperdown on 11 November, 1889. On 19 December, 1889 he took command of Camperdown when she was commissioned at Portsmouth. He was appointed in command of the new second class battleship H.M.S. Victoria, flagship of the Mediterranean Fleet, on 29 April, 1890.[4]

He was appointed Captain of Portsmouth Dockyard Reserve on 25 January, 1892.[5]

Burnell was appointed Captain of the Steam Reserve at Portsmouth on 15 January, 1895.[6] and appointed Naval Aides-de-Camp to Queen Victoria on 20 February, 1895.[7]

Placed on the Retired List on 27 December 1897, Burnell was advanced to the rank of Rear-Admiral on 1 January, 1899 and to Vice-Admiral on 30 August, 1903.[8]

He died in 1928 of bronchitis and senile decay.
