Rear Admiral John Augustus Rodgers (26 July, 1848 – 2 March, 1933) served in the United States Navy.

Life & Career

Rodgers was part of a famous naval "dynasty" that saw members serving as commissioned officers in the Navy from its founding through the early Twentieth Century. He was a grandson of Commodore John Rodgers and father of pioneering naval aviator Commander John Rodgers.

Rodgers was born in Maryland and was appointed to the Naval Academy as the son of an officer, graduating with the Class of 1867. He had a routine career following graduation, with a mix of sea and shore duty and the usual set of promotions. Rodgers was promoted to the rank of Ensign on 19 April 1869,[1] to the rank of Lieutenant on 2 February, 1874,[2] and to the rank of Lieutenant Commander on 1 March, 1895.[3]

During the Spanish-American War, Rodgers served as Executive Officer of battleship Indiana, being advanced in seniority for his actions at the Battle of Santiago de Cuba.[4][5] He was promoted to the rank of Commander on 3 March, 1899.[6]

Rodgers was appointed to his first command, protected cruiser Albany in February, 1902. He was promoted to the rank of Captain on 27 December, 1903, and relieved of command the following month. Before the end of 1904, he was appointed to command battleship Illinois, remaining in command until June, 1906.[7][8][9]

Promoted to the rank of Rear Admiral on 7 September, 1908, Rodgers never flew his flag at sea. He served as Commandant of the Puget Sound Navy Yard until he was placed on the Retired List due to age on 26 July, 1910.[10][11]
