Captain John Alexander Ingles (27 July, 1875 – 20 April, 1934) was an officer in the Royal Navy.

Life & Career

Ingles was confirmed in the rank of Sub-Lieutenant dated 14 July, 1894.[1]

He was promoted to the rank of Lieutenant dated 31 December, 1896.[2]

He was promoted to the rank of Commander on 31 December, 1907.[3]

He was appointed in command of the third class protected cruiser Pegasus on 1 December, 1913.[4] He was obliged to strike her colours when the German light cruiser Königsberg encountered her as she was repairing a balky engineering plant in Zanzibar harbour.

After Pegasus was destroyed, he was appointed in succession to the second class protected cruiser Fox and the second class protected cruiser Hyacinth for service, initially as “Officer Commanding, Zanzibar, intelligence details, etc.” [sic], and later as Naval Officer in charge, Dar-es-Salaam.[5] He was awarded the third class of the Order of the Brilliant Star of Zanzibar in 1919.[6]

Ingles was appointed as acting captain of the battleship Albemarle on 1 May, 1919. On 18 October, he was appointed in command of Donegal.

He was placed on the Retired List with the rank of Captain at his own request on 28 July, 1921.[7]
