He failed several evaluations and was promoted to the rank of Commander on 31 December while still hospitalised. He emerged on 11 January, 1915 with a clean bill of health.[3]

He was appointed in command of the sloop Odin on 16 April, 1917, assuming command around 18 May. He would serve in this role through the end of the war.[4]

Post-War

Salmond married Mary Anastasia Victoria Mostyn on 18 November, 1920.[5] Salmond was promoted to the rank of Captain on 31 December, 1920.[6]

Salmond was appointed in command of the light cruiser Yarmouth in January, 1923.

On 1 January, 1931, Salmond was appointed in command of the battleship Malaya.
