James Elphinstone Erskine
Admiral of the Fleet SIR James Elphinstone Erskine, K.C.B. (2 December, 1838 – 25 July, 1911) was an officer of the Royal Navy during the latter part of the nineteenth century.
Life & Career
Erskine was born on 2 December, 1838, the second son of James Erskine of Cardross by his marriage to Mary Fagan. He joined the Royal Navy in 1852 and enjoyed a meteoric rise, becoming a Captain in 1868 following command of the Speedwell, 5 guns.
He was promoted to the rank of Rear-Admiral on 18 January, 1886, vice Baird.[1]
Erskine was promoted to the rank of Admiral on 23 August, 1897, vice Lyons.[2]
In the Queen's Diamond Jubilee honours, Erskine was gazetted a Knight Commander of the Military Division of the Most Honourable Order of the Bath (K.C.B.) on 14 March, 1898.[3]
Erskine was promoted to the rank of Admiral of the Fleet on 3 October, 1902, in the place of the Earl of Clanwilliam.[4]
