Captain Irving Montgomery Palmer, D.S.C., R.N. (23 January, 1889 – ) served in the Royal Navy.

Life & Career

Born in Armagh.

Palmer was promoted to the rank of Lieutenant on 1 April, 1911.[1]

At the outset of the war, Palmer was on the books of Pelorus, in command of an armed launch until being appointed in command of Gadfly on 27 December, 1915.[2]

Palmer was promoted to the rank of Lieutenant-Commander on 1 April, 1919.[3]

Appointed to Caradoc from 17 February, 1922 until January, 1924. He spent a few days in temporary command in August, 1922. On 14 November 1923, one of her whalers was lost. A Court of Enquiry found that Palmer was guilty of an error in judgment, but no further action was taken.[4]

Palmer was promoted to the rank of Commander on 30 June, 1925.[5]

Palmer was promoted to the rank of Captain on 30 June, 1932.[6]

Palmer was appointed in command of the battleship Centurion in January, 1935.[7]

World War II

In mid-August 1940, acute appendicitis. He was found fit on 25 October, but on 25 November he was admitted to Middlesex Hospital for injured ribs, being released on the 26th.[8]

Placed on the Retired List on 6 February, 1942.[9]
