Lieutenant Herbert Julian Carn-Duff, D.S.C. (13 July, 1892 – 13 April, 1922) served in the Royal Navy. He would become well-known as a rugby player, but drowned at age 29.
Life & Career
The son of The Honourable Mr. Justice Carn-Duff, C.H. of Calcutta.
Carn-Duff was promoted to Sub-Lieutenant on 30 September, 1912.[1]
Carn-Duff was promoted to the rank of Lieutenant on 30 June, 1914.[2]
The Commander-in-Chief, Portsmouth considered Carn-Duff "much to blame" in a grounding of P45 and the Lieutenant was cautioned to be more careful in future.[3]
Carn-Duff was appointed in command of the destroyer Lucifer on 28 January, 1918.[4]
Appointed to Valiant on 1 September 1921, Carn-Duff drowned at Plymouth "under mysterious circumstances" on 13 April, 1922. He had gone ashore to play rugby, and was seen in Plymouth at 11.20pm, "sober and normal". His body was found the next day off Bull Point. It was thought that he might have fallen into the water while trying to find a boat that could take him back to the battleship.[5][6]
