Captain Henry Allen Adams, Jr., (6 June, 1833 – 1 February, 1878) served in the United States Navy.
Life & Career
The son of a career Navy officer who rose to Commodore on the Retired List, Adams was born in Pennsylvania and was appointed to the Naval Academy from that state in 1849.[1]
Adams graduated in 1851 (at this time the 4 year curriculum had not been established at the Naval Academy) and earned promotion to the rank of Lieutenant on 11 May 1856.
During the Civil War Adams served aboard Sciota and commanded the J P Jackson. He was promoted to the rank of Lieutenant Commander on 12 Jul 1862. in 1865 he helped escort President Abraham Lincoln when the President visited Richmond, Virginia at the end of the war.[2]
Following the war, Adams was promoted to the rank of Commander on 25 July, 1866.[3] He commanded the store-ship Guard and the sloop Iroquois as well as the receiving ship Potomac.[4]
Adams was promoted to the rank of Captain on 28 March 1877.[5] At the time, he served as commanding officer of the frigate Constitution.[6]
Adams died in Montevideo, Uruguay on 1 February 1878 while in command of the sloop Hartford.[7]
