H.M.S. Leander (1882)
Builder: Robert Napier & Sons, Glasgow[1]
Laid down: 14 Jun, 1880[2]
Launched: 28 Oct, 1882[3]
Commissioned: 29 May, 1885[4]
Sold: 1920[5]

H.M.S. Leander was completed in 1885 as one of four second class protected cruisers of the Leander class, but she served as a depot ship in the Great War.

There was also a light cruiser named Leander launched in 1931.

Construction

Her trials were interrupted when defects in her pistons were discovered. After repairs and some alterations, she resumed her trials in the Medway in September 1883.[6]

Service

Re-commissioned at Hong Kong on 5 April, 1889.[7]

In June 1904 she completed conversion to a depot ship for destroyers.[8]

She was working as part of the Fifth Destroyer Flotilla from at least March, 1910 through 1 November, 1911.

In mid-1913, she was acting as depot ship for the Seventh Destroyer Flotilla, and was still there when the war started. She left the flotilla sometime between October and November, 1914. In December 1914, she made it to Scapa Flow where she would remain through much of the war, catering to the needs of older destroyers attached to the Grand Fleet, presumably patrolling near Scapa.

In April, 1918, she joined the Third Destroyer Flotilla, but this flotilla was so blessedly small (having no destroyers at all by June!) that she soon joined the Twentieth Destroyer Flotilla in July 1918.[9]
