H.M.S. Isis was commissioned in 1898 as one of nine Eclipse class cruisers completed for the Royal Navy.

Service

Isis was commissioned at Chatham on 10 May, 1898 under the command of Captain Henry Hart Dyke.[8]

In May 1902, Isis became a cadet training ship.[9]

On 30 March 1909, the ship completed at Devonport for service in the Home Fleet. After delivering unsatisfactory results in gunlayer's tests conducted in May,[10][11] she operated as one of two cruisers attached to the First Battle Squadron.[12]

Isis was re-commissioned at Devonport on 14 February, 1912 for service with the Third Fleet. In July, 1913 she was ordered to Portsmouth for a refit.[13]

She was commissioned on 25 May 1914 for service with the Eleventh Cruiser Squadron. Theseus would then transfer to the Tenth Cruiser Squadron.[14]
