Admiral SIR Guy Reginald Archer Gaunt, K.C.M.G., C.B., Royal Navy, Retired (25 May, 1869 – 19 May, 1953) was an officer of the Royal Navy during the First World War.

Life & Career

Gaunt was specially promoted from the Supplementary List of Lieutenants to the rank of Commander on 30 June, 1901, for services in Samoa.[1]

Captain

Gaunt was promoted to the rank of Captain on 30 June, 1907.[2]

On 15 February, 1910, Gaunt was appointed in command of the cruiser Challenger.[3]

On 1 June, 1914, Gaunt was appointed Naval Attaché at Washington, D.C..[4]

Great War

He was appointed an Additional Member of the Third Class, or Companion, of the Most Distinguished Order of Saint Michael and Saint George (C.M.G.) on 1 January, 1916.[5]

On the occasion of the King's birthday he was appointed an Additional Member of the Third Class, or Companion, in the Civil Division of the Most Honourable Order of the Bath (C.B.) on 3 June, 1918.[6] He was appointed a Naval Aide-de-Camp to King George V on 16 August, vice Borrett.[7] An Order in Council was obtained allowing Gaunt to be promoted to the rank of Rear-Admiral when his turn came, despite not having the requisite qualifying service in command of a Ship of War at Sea.[8] On 10 September he was appointed an Ordinary Member of the Second Class, or Knight Commander, of the Order of Saint Michael and Saint George (K.C.M.G.).[9] He was promoted to the rank of Rear-Admiral on 26 October, 1918, vice Napier, and was placed on the Retired List at his own request on 27 October.[10]

Retirement

He was promoted to the rank of Vice-Admiral on the Retired List on 19 July, 1924,[11] and was advanced to Admiral on the Retired List on 22 February, 1928.[12]
