Admiral SIR George Price Webley Hope, K.C.B., K.C.M.G., Royal Navy (11 October, 1869 – 11 July, 1959) was an officer of the Royal Navy.

Life & Career

Hope was promoted to the rank of Lieutenant, dated 11 October, 1889.[1] On 12 December, 1895, Hope was appointed to the new battleship Magnificent.[2]

Hope was promoted to the rank of Commander on 30 June, 1900.[3]

Captain

Hope was promoted to the rank of Captain on 30 June, 1905.[4]

Hope was appointed in command of H.M.S. Magnificent, and as Flag Captain, on 24 March, 1909.[5]

On 8 February, 1910, Hope recommissioned Magnificent.[6] On 18 March, he was appointed in command of the Bulwark.[7]

He was appointed command of the dreadnought Superb on 30 April, 1913.[8]

Great War

On 29 July, 1914, Hope was appointed in command of H.M.S. King Alfred.[Citation needed] He retained this command until 1 October, when he was appointed to Victory at Portsmouth for command of the new battleship Queen Elizabeth.[Citation needed]

Hope was appointed an Additional Member of the Third Class, or Companion, in the Military Division of the Most Honourable Order of the Bath (C.B.) on 1 January, 1916.[9]

On 9 September Jellicoe proposed to Sir Henry B. Jackson, the First Sea Lord, that Hope be appointed Rear-Admiral in the Fifth Battle Squadron on promotion to Flag Rank, so that in the event of splitting the squadron on deployment ships of the Queen Elizabeth class could be under command of a flag officer at either end of the line of battle.[10]

On 15 December, 1916 he went to the Admiralty as Second Director of the Operations Division on the War Staff. He was promoted to the rank of Rear-Admiral on 3 April, 1917, vice Anson.[11] On 11 June, 1917 he succeeded Rear-Admiral Thomas Jackson as Director of the division.[12] He retained this position until 9 January, 1918, and on the 10th he was appointed Deputy First Sea Lord and a Lord Commissioner of the Board of Admiralty.

Post-War

On the occasion of the King's birthday he was appointed an Additional Member of the Second Class, or Knight Commander, of the Most Distinguished Order of Saint Michael and Saint George (K.C.M.G.) on 3 June, 1919.[13]

He was promoted to the rank of Vice-Admiral on 26 November, 1920, vice Power.[14]

Hope was promoted to the rank of Admiral on 24 November, 1925, vice de Robeck.[15] He was placed on the Retired List at his own request on 2 March, 1926.[16]
