Captain (retired) Geoffry Bertram Smith, R.N. (28 June, 1889 – ) was an officer in the Royal Navy. His first name was initially entered on his service record as "Geoffrey", but was explicitly corrected into its unconventional spelling.

Life & Career

Born in Cambridge, the son of tutor C. Smith, Esq., Geoffry gained two and a half months' time on passing out of Britannia in mid-September, 1905.

Smith was promoted to the rank of Lieutenant on 30 June, 1910.

Smith was appointed Lieutenant in Command of the first-class torpedo boat T.B. 29 on 29 July, 1914.[1]

Smith was promoted to the rank of Lieutenant-Commander on 30 June, 1918.

Smith was promoted to the rank of Commander on 30 June, 1923.

Smith was placed on the Retired List at his own request with the rank of Captain on 28 June, 1935. In 1938, he was ordained as a Deacon in the Church. In 1939 he was made a temporary Chaplain in the R.N.V.R., and commenced work with destroyers and small craft at Plymouth.
