Captain Ernest Sausmarez Carey (12 March, 1872 – 2 September, 1927) was an officer in the Royal Navy who distinguished himself as a young officer in handling logistics of the landing of the Somaliland Expedition in 1903.

Carey's middle name was first recorded in the Navy as "Saumarez" until he sent a letter on 18 December, 1903 offering the proper, if unusual, spelling.

Life & Career

Carey was being raised by his mother in Malvern when he joined the Royal Navy. He gained eight months' time on passing out of Britannia in December, 1886.[1]

Carey was promoted to the rank of Lieutenant on 30 June, 1893.[2]

Carey was commander of the second-class torpedo boat T.B. 8 in May, 1894.[3]

On 27 December, 1900, he was appointed in command of the destroyer Cynthia.[4]

On 19 March, 1901, Carey was appointed to Naiad as first lieutenant. He was lent by the Senior Naval Officer as Provost Marshal of Somaliland Field Force in 1903.

In January, 1903 Carey assisted in the disembarkation of the Somaliland Expedition at Obbia. Carey left Naiad when he was promoted to the rank of Commander on 30 June, 1903. He was appointed to Bedford as executive officer on 12 September, 1904.[6]

In April, 1906 Carey passed a preliminary examination in French. Further work granted him a qualification as Acting Interpreter in French in October.[7]

Carey was promoted to the rank of Captain on 31 December, 1909.[8]

Carey was appointed in command of the scout cruiser Boadicea in July, 1912 and was placed in charge of the Third Destroyer Flotilla. In November of 1912, Beagle collided with the Portland Breakwater and Carey was told he should have made it clear to the flotilla what order he intended them to leave the harbour.[10]

On February, 1913 Carey asked to be placed on Half Pay due to ill health. He was to enter Osborne Convalescent Home on 7 April, but this was delayed until 5 May.
