Commander R.N.R. (retired) Arthur Howard Notley, R.D. (31 October, 1876 – ) was an officer in the Royal Naval Reserve.

Life & Career

Notley was promoted to the rank of Lieutenant R.N.R. on 18 October, 1909.[1]

In 1916, he received an expression of the Admiralty's appreciation on the occasion of the loss of armed boarding steamer H.M.S. Fauvette.[2]

Notley was appointed Lieutenant, R.N.R. in Command of the patrol boat P27 on 28 February, 1917.[3]

He was blamed for a 1917 collision she suffered with the barge Yarana (or Varana), and for a second one with the minelayer Paris in 1918.[4]

Notley was promoted to the rank of Lieutenant-Commander R.N.R. on 18 October, 1917.[5]

Demobilised on 18 February, 1919.

Notley was placed on the Retired List on account of age at the rank of Commander R.N.R. on 31 October, 1921.[6]

In 1948, Notley dutifully responded to a request for his service readiness, choosing "I am not fit for service, because ______" and writing in "I am now 72 years of age." He was retired at the time, living in Bideford, Devon.[7]
