The Scottish town of Cromarty was a minor Royal Navy base in the Great War, situated on the eastern coast on the Moray Firth. It served as the base for Auxiliary Patrol Area IV.

The armoured cruiser H.M.S. Natal was destroyed in a cataclysmic explosion on 30 December, 1915 with heavy loss of life.
