Commander Edward Howell Cater, R.N. (15 July, 1883 – 7 August, 1915) served in the Royal Navy.

Life & Career

Cater was promoted to the rank of Lieutenant on 30 September, 1905.[1]

A second appointment in command of Violet dated 31 January 1911 was cancelled, and Cater remained in command of Cygnet until 16 May, 1911 when he was appointed to Leviathan of the Fourth Cruiser Squadron.[2]

On 9 October 1911, he was admitted to Plymouth Hospital for three weeks to be treated for cellulitis on his left hand. His recovery proved retracted, but its overall duration is hard to discern. Around this same time, he was castigated for a state of disarray in the small arms of Cygnet.

Cater was promoted to the rank of Lieutenant-Commander on 30 September, 1913.

Cater was promoted to the rank of Commander on 31 July, 1915 and appointed to Europa, additional at Mudros. He died one week later at the Dardanelles on Z Beach, where he had served as Assistant Beachmaster at Anzac Beach.

He would be posthumously mentioned in despatches for services in Gallipoli, dated 14 March 1916.
