Vice-Admiral (retired) George William McOran Campbell, R.N. (12 June, 1877 – 23 February, 1948) was an officer in the Royal Navy.

Life & Career

Campbell was promoted to the rank of Lieutenant on 1 October, 1899.[1]

Campbell was promoted to the rank of Commander on 31 December, 1911.[2][3]

Upon being superseded in command of Tartar in January 1912, Campbell started a series of appointments in battleships, starting with Cæsar on 30 January and moving to Bulwark upon her re-commissioning in April. He was then sent to join the armoured cruiser Roxburgh on 4 June, remaining with her for nearly two years.[4]

Campbell was appointed in command of the first-class torpedo boat T.B. 99 on 15 April, 1914.

Great War

Campbell remained in command of T.B. 99 until being superseded by William Gilbert Howard on 8 January, 1916, at which time Campbell was appointed in command of the "M" Class destroyer Obedient.[5]

Campbell commanded the destroyer Obedient at the Battle of Jutland as part of the Twelfth Destroyer Flotilla.[6]

Campbell was promoted to the rank of Captain on 30 June, 1916.[7]

On 28 August, 1916, Campbell was appointed in command of the first class protected cruiser Blake.

Post-War

Campbell was appointed in command of the battleship Thunderer in August, 1924.

Campbell was promoted to the rank of Rear-Admiral on 15 January, 1928 and placed on the Retired List the following day.[8]

Campbell was promoted to the rank of Vice-Admiral on the Retired List on 24 September, 1932.[9]

World War II

Campbell was appointed to the Liverpool Convoy Pool on 14 March, 1940 with the rank of Commodore, Second Class, R.N.R.. He reverted to the Retired List on 22 October, 1940.[10]

Campbell died at Monkswell, Horrabridge at age 71.[11]
