Robert Herbert Borgnis Hammond-Chambers
Commander (retired) Robert Herbert Borgnis Hammond-Chambers, D.S.O. (1 April, 1882 – ) was an officer in the Royal Navy.
Life & Career
Hammond-Chambers was promoted to the rank of Lieutenant on 30 September, 1903.[1]
Hammond-Chambers was promoted to the rank of Lieutenant-Commander on 30 September, 1911.[2]
Hammond-Chambers retired at his own request on 1 April, 1912.[3]
Hammond-Chambers was appointed in command of the destroyer Myrmidon on 9 October, 1914.[4]
Mentioned in despatches for services in raids on Zeebrugge and Ostend on 22-23 April, 1918. He would receive a D.S.O. for this on 22 February, 1919.[5]
On 28 May, 1918, Hammond-Chambers was appointed in command of the flotilla leader Botha.[6]
Hammond-Chambers was promoted to the rank of Commander on 1 April, 1919, antedated to 11 November, 1918.[7]
World War II
Hammond-Chambers received three weeks of anti-submarine warfare training in mid-1939. On 26 September, he was placed in command of Cayton Wyke and of a group of anti-submarine trawlers. Sometime after February, 1940, he was made Maintenance Commander, Kirkwall Base.[8]
At the end of 1942 he was appointed in command of the land establishment H.M.S. Excalibur in the acting rank of Captain. He was superseded in or around March, 1944 and took up unspecified work on the books of Pembroke.[9]
On 8 December, 1944, he dislocated his right elbow on the Isle of Man.
