Two Kaiser class armored frigates were completed for the Imperial German Navy in 1875.
Design & Construction
The 'Kaiser class were built to an 1869 design by Sir Edward Reed, and were the last capital ships ordered by Germany from foreign builders.[1][2]
They were iron-hulled with a transvere bulkhead and double longitudinal frame construction. Their machinery consisted of one two-cylinder single-expansion engine driving a single four-bladed propeller and powered by eight J. Penn & Sons trunk boilers.[3]
Performance
They were good, stable seaboats with a gentle motion. They were also very responsive to the helm, although they had a "moderate" turning circle.[4]
