Lionel de Lautour Wells
Captain (retired) SIR Lionel de Lautour Wells, C.B.E., R.N. (31 January, 1859 – 15 March, 1929) served in the Royal Navy.
Life & Career
In July, 1871, Wells was ranked sixth in order of merit of thirty-five candidates accepted as Naval Cadets following the entrance examinations.[1]
Wells was promoted to the rank of Lieutenant on 11 September, 1881.[2]
Wells was promoted to the rank of Commander with seniority 30 June, 1892 as he participated in the Annual Manoeuvres of 1892 in command of Sharpshooter. In September, he would be appointed to H.M.S. Vivid, additional for special service in connection with the revision of the Signal Manual.[3]
He commanded the destroyer Banshee in the Annual Manoeuvres of 1896. When they concluded in August, he was appointed in command of the "27 knotter" H.M.S. Skate.
Wells was placed on the Retired List on account of non-service with the rank of Captain on 7 November, 1901.[4]
Great War
Wells was put to work near Gallipoli, as Senior Naval Officer, Mudros. In 1917, he was sent to New York to be Senior British Naval Officer ashore.
From June to August 1919 he worked on Rear-Admiral Halsey's committee to shape peace celebrations, and was reverted to the Retired List on 14 August, 1919.[5]
