Captain Richard Horne, D.S.O., (21 May, 1877 – 3 February, 1927) was an officer in the Royal Navy.

Life & Career

Horne was promoted to the rank of Lieutenant on 31 December, 1899.[1]

In December, 1894, he was deprived of one month's time for smoking at midday. He was medically unfit for much of 1896, and was sent home in a steamer.[2]

He was appointed as navigator in the Beagle on 14 May, 1901. On 3 September, 1902, Beagle ran aground and a Court of Enquiry was convened. Horne was found at fault and cautioned to be more careful in future. When Beagle paid off on 29 July, 1904, Horne was appointed to Mercury for a navigation course. [3]

Horne was promoted to the rank of Commander on 31 December, 1911.[4]

Horne was appointed as navigation officer in Orion on 28 January, 1913. He incurred the displeasure of the Admiralty for returning charts from Leviathan in an unacceptable condition, but moved past this rebuke to provide long service in his new ship. Horne conned Orion throughout the Battle of Jutland. He quit the ship on 13 August, 1917 and was appointed in command of the scout cruiser Foresight on the 29th.[5]

Horne was promoted to the rank of Captain on 31 December, 1917.[6]

He was appointed in command of the Barham on 1 October, 1918, as Flag Captain and Chief Staff Officer to Vice-Admiral Leveson.[7] He was superseded exactly two years later.[8]

Horne was placed on the Retired List, antedated 24 February, 1923. He was killed in a motor accident in 1927, just outside Petworth, Sussex.[9]
