S 42 was a torpedo boat completed for the Imperial German Navy in 1889.

Construction

Launched on 29 May, 1887.[7]

Service

Commissioned on 27 June, 1889 and reboilered in 1896. She was sunk in a collision with the British merchantman S.S. Firsby on 24 June 1902 in the Elbe estuary (53°56'N, 08°49'E). Five of her crew died in the accident. She was subsequently raised and returned to service as a training vessel.[8]

She was renamed T 42 on 11 November, 1910 and served as a minesweeper and coast defense vessel from 1915 until becoming a tender in 1917, and was retained by the Reichsmarine until being stricken on 26 October, 1920. Sold for 95,000M on 6 January, 1921 and broken up at Wilhelmshaven.[9]
