Lieutenant Gerald Leather, R.N. (11 August, 1889 – 5 September, 1914) was an officer in the Royal Navy.
Life & Career
Born in Cleckheaton.
Leather was promoted to the rank of Sub-Lieutenant on 15 July, 1909.[1]
Leather was promoted to the rank of Lieutenant on 15 October, 1910. He was appointed to the destroyer Ure on 6 February, 1911, but was moved to Rifleman a month later. Early in 1912, his captain, Lt. Cdr. Denny, recorded that Leather had "not much ability or energy but tries his best. Likely to make gd nvgr."[2]
Captain Ricardo of Vanguard, in which Leather served as Assistant Navigator between June and November 1912, noted that Leather was "careful and reliable", but that he had "not good chge of men".[3]
After a year in the destroyer Acasta as navigator, Leather was appointed to the scout cruiser Pathfinder in October 1913 for navigating duties and died when she was torpedoed by U 21 on 5 September 1914.[4]
