Captain (retired) William Dion Irvin, C.B.E., R.N., Retired (8 December, 1870 – 12 September, 1956) was an officer in the Royal Navy.
Life & Career
Irvin was appointed in command of the destroyer Usk on 5 September, 1909.[1]
He commanded the destroyer Moon at the Battle of Jutland, operating with the Eleventh Destroyer Flotilla.[2]
Irvin was promoted to the rank of Commander on 2 September, 1916. On 19 February, 1918 he was granted the rank of acting Captain.[3]
Irvin was awarded the C.B.E. for his valuable services as Commodore of Convoys, gazetted 27 May, 1919. He was placed on the Retired List on and advanced to the rank of Captain on 12 August, 1919.[4]
World War II
Irvin was summoned. He was placed back on the Retired List on 4 April, 1949 as medically unfit. He died in 1956 of heart ailments and pneumonia.[5]
