Captain Cecil Rudolph Ernest Wilbraham Perryman, D.S.C., R.N., Retired (4 December, 1887 – ) was an officer in the Royal Navy.
Life & Career
Born in London, Perryman gained three and a half months time on passing out of Britannia on 15 January, 1904. He was appointed that day to Blenheim on the China Station. Some time later that year, he moved to join the first class protected cruiser Andromeda. Remaining in her until she paid off on 16 July, 1906, Perryman received the tepid review of "Promising but rather slow" from Captain Robert Nelson Ommanney and was appointed to the Duncan Class battleship Albemarle of the Channel Squadron. There, Perryman was promoted to the rank of Sub-Lieutenant on 15 April, 1907.[1]
Perryman was appointed to Dreadnought on 8 August, 1908 and served in her until 2 August 1909 when he was appointed to Blake for the "C" Class destroyer Fawn.[2]
Perryman was promoted to the rank of Lieutenant on 31 December, 1909 and continued to work in Fawn in lieu of a Sub-Lieutenant.[3]
Perryman was appointed Lieutenant & Commander of the first-class torpedo boat T.B. 15 on 1 May, 1912.[4]
Perryman was appointed in command of the destroyer Osprey on 3 February, 1914.[5]
Great War
An appointment to command Griffon in February 1915 was not carried out, and Perryman remained in Osprey until 6 July, 1916 when he was appointed in command of the destroyer Lydiard. On 12 June, 1917, Perryman grounded Lydiard and the Admiralty found him "entirely to blame" and "cautioned to be very much more careful in handling his ship in future." This mild variation on the customary phraseology of such remarks is decidedly pronounced when compared to the body of such directives across the navy.[6]
Perryman served as captain of the destroyer Tenacious from July, 1917 to February, 1918, receiving his promotion to Lieutenant-Commander on 31 December, having just distinguished himself in an encounter with an enemy submarine on Christmas Eve. Perryman's work in Tenacious was described by Captain (D) Gladstone of the Eleventh Destroyer Flotilla as that of a good destroyer officer who showed initiative in encounters with enemy submarines.[7]
On the 13th of February, 1918 Perryman left Tenacious and was appointed in command of the "R" Class destroyer Sharpshooter, operating with the Harwich Force's Tenth Destroyer Flotilla. He would serve in her through the end of the war.[8]
Post-War
He was appointed in command of the destroyer Wild Swan on 5 February, 1920.[9] Perryman was chastised by the Admiralty for his explanation of a discrepancy between an S.450 award submitted for Wild Swan's Lieutenant Reginald F. Morice in December 1921 and an S.206 submitted for the man the following month.[10]
Perryman was promoted to the rank of Commander on 31 December, 1923.[11]
On 9 June, 1924 he was appointed to Dido, additional. One week later, this appointment was broadened to include command of a group of destroyers in reserve. Perryman was lent for command of Undine in Reserve Fleet Exercises on 10 July, 1924, but returned to Dido on 21 August and remained there until being superseded on 18 May, 1925.[12]
Perryman was appointed in command of the prototype destroyer Amazon 29 October, 1928. Periodic transfers to Woolston in command may have happened on about June, 1929 and in late 1929, but Perryman otherwise remained in command of Amazon until being appointed to Ardent on 19 April, 1930. Perryman was relieved in command on 6 November, 1930.[13]
In 1932, his request for the acting rank of Captain was refused.
Perryman was placed on the Retired List with the rank of Captain on 4 December, 1933.[14]
World War II
Perryman served in a variety of capacities. On 13 July, 1942 he was appointed D.S.T.O. in Mombasa vice Moore. In late 1944 he was sent to the Mediterranean vice Brock, serving as a Commodore, Second Class. He was released from service in mid 1946.[15]
