Rear-Admiral George Parish Ross, C.B., Royal Navy (Retired) (7 February, 1875 – 1 February, 1942) was an officer of the Royal Navy.
Life & Career
Ross was the youngest son of Horatio John Ross of the Bengal Civil Service.
Ross was promoted to the rank of Lieutenant, dated 1 December, 1896.[1]
On 30 June, 1908, Ross was promoted to the rank of Commander.[2]
He was appointed as acting captain of King Edward VII on 17 May, 1912.[3]
He was appointed to command Marlborough on 25 May, 1914[4] despite his promotion to Captain occurring on 30 June, 1914.[5] He commanded her at the Battle of Jutland, where she was torpedoed as Ross related in his report.
On 15 September 1916 Ross was appointed an Additional Member of the Third Class, or Companion, in the Military Division of the Most Honourable Order of the Bath (C.B.) dated 31 May.[6]
He was appointed to command Revenge on 11 February, 1917[7] and was superseded on 15 April, 1919 and placed on the Retired List at his own request on 19 August.[Citation needed] He was promoted to Rear-Admiral on the Retired List on 1 January, 1925.[8]
Ross acted as a pall-bearer for Sir Cecil Burney upon his death in 1929.
Ross died on 1 February, 1942 at 193, Queen's Gate, S.W.7. He was sixty-seven years old. His funeral service took place at St. Mary's Church, Kensington on 4 February, 11.30 a.m.
