Captain Harry Stewart Murray-Smith, (3 June, 1897 – 3 June, 1950) served in the Royal Navy. Prior to 1933, his name was Harry Stewart Murray Smith.

Life & Career

The son of H. W. Smith, [illeg] to the Signet.

Harry Stewart Murray Smith was a member of a large special entry to the Training Establishment in September, 1915. Upon passing out in February, 1916 he was appointed to the Bellerophon. He would fight in her at the Battle of Jutland. Leaving her in January, 1918, he was appointed to the destroyer Orestes of the Fourteenth Destroyer Flotilla, a formation tasked with screening the Grand Fleet.[1]

On 29 October 1918, he was appointed to the destroyer Tobago.[2]

Smith was promoted to the rank of Lieutenant on 15 August, 1919.[3]

He trained in aviation, and by December 1923 was an Acting Observer appointed to Argus.

Smith was promoted to the rank of Lieutenant-Commander on 15 August, 1927.[4]

Murray-Smith was promoted to the rank of Commander on 30 June, 1933.[5]

World War II

Murray-Smith was promoted to the rank of Captain on 31 December, 1939.[6]

Suffering from emphysema, he was placed on the Retired List as medically unfit on 1 November, 1947.[7]
