U.S.S. Badger was a former merchant ship purchased and converted into an auxiliary cruiser by the United States Navy in 1898.

Construction

Purchased from the Ward Line by the U.S. Navy on 19 April, 1898 and renamed Badger.[8]

Service

Badger was commissioned on 22 April, 1898, with Commander Albert S. Snow in command.

Transferred to the War Department on 7 April, 1900 and renamed Lawton, she was returned to the Navy on 12 November, 1902. Retaining the name Lawton, she served as a transport until stricken again on 24 April, 1907.[9]
