H.M.S. Surprise was one of two Surprise Class third class protected cruisers completed for the Royal Navy.
Service
The ship visited the port of Mahon in Minorca, Spain from 16-17 May, 1888 under the command of Maurice Archibald Bourke.[6]
She was re-commissioned at Portsmouth on 23 March, 1889.[7]
In February 1913, she was renamed H.M.S. Alacrity.
