Admiral Hubert Grant-Dalton, Royal Navy, Retired (21 July, 1862 – 22 April, 1934) was an officer of the Royal Navy.

Early Life & Career

He came third in order of merit out of forty-two candidates who passed the examination for naval cadetships.[1]

He was promoted to the rank of Lieutenant with seniority of 21 June, 1884.

In March 1894, Grant-Dalton assisted in operations against an illegible opponent, gazetted 4 May 1894 and was engaged against Nana of Brohemie, Nigeria in September 1894.[2]

In February 1895, Grant-Dalton participated in the Brass River Expedition, where his service drew praise from Admiral Bedford. In APril 1895 he took ill. He regained his fitness in June, but it was advised that he should nearer home.[3]

Grant-Dalton was promoted to the rank of Commander on 31 December, 1895.[4]

Grant-Dalton grounded Bellona at Hval Fjord in 1901 by entering at excessive speed.[5]

Grant-Dalton was superseded in command of Bellona in January 1903 to attend to his seriously ill mother, being replaced by The Honorable Stanhope Hawke.[6]

Captain

Grant-Dalton was promoted to the rank of Captain on 30 June, 1904.[7]

In January 1905, he was appointed in command of the second class protected cruiser Flora on the China Station, remaining there until 23 August 1907 when he was appointed in command of Crescent for the voyage home.[8]

He was appointed in command of the battleship Ramillies and a group of special service ships on 1 February, 1908.[9]

Grant-Dalton was appointed an Ordinary Member of the Third Class, or Companion, in the Military Division of the Most Honourable Order of the Bath (C.B.) on 1 January, 1914.[10]

Great War

On 1 August 1914, Grant-Dalton was appointed in command of the first class protected cruiser Amphitrite, remaining in her until being superseded on 16 May, 1915.[11]

Grant-Dalton was promoted to the rank of Rear-Admiral on 11 April, 1915, vice Moggridge.[12] Due to the lack of positions available for an officer of his age, he was placed on the Retired List on 2 June.[13] On 7 September, he was appointed Admiralty Representative in connection with the supply of ammunition in Ireland. On 18 January, 1916, this was altered to the Birmingham Area. He ceased this work on 19 September 1916.[14]

Grant-Dalton was advanced to the rank of Vice-Admiral (Retired) on 1 November, 1919,[15] and to the rank of Admiral on 1 August, 1924.[16]
