Midshipman Walter Leslie Rundle, (25 September, 1851 – 22 June, 1869) served in the Royal Navy.

Life & Career

Rundle was appointed to Minotaur on 12 April, 1867, and died died as a Midshipman on full pay in mid-1869.

Newspapers reports indicate that he was appointed to Endymion, additional,[1] and then to the wooden screw corvette Scylla, additional[2] in late May 1869.

He died on 22 June due to disease at East Park, Newton Abbot,[3] which introduces some doubt as to which ship he was assigned, exactly, at the time of death. Minotaur, if he was in her, was then flagship in the Channel Squadron.

Rundle's messmates erected a plaque in All Saints Church, Highweek, Devon "as a token of their sincere regard and esteem for one who was frank and open-hearted, and who, by the amiability of his disposition, became a favourite with all."

The plaque sits alongside Captain Joseph Sparkhall Rundle, (5 August, 1815 – 1880), and Commander Walter Wemyss Leslie, (? – 1863).[4]

Rundle Road, named after the family, is near the site of East Park (since demolished), in Highweek parish of Newton Abbot.[5]
