Vice-Admiral (retired) George William Hill, R.N. (20 July, 1843 – 25 September, 1905) was an officer in the Royal Navy.
Life & Career
Hill was promoted to the rank of Lieutenant on 13 March, 1866.
Hill was promoted to the rank of Commander on 31 December, 1878.
In late 1881 Hill was informed that his "injudicious behaviour" was in part responsible for insubordination of men in Bacchante.
Hill was promoted to the rank of Captain on 21 June, 1887.
Hill commanded the second class protected cruiser Medea in the Annual Manoeuvres of 1890. His ship acted as part of Fleet Number 2 which represented a hypothetical Hostile Fleet attacking British trade routes.[1]
Hill was appointed in command of the second class protected cruiser Marathon on 16 September, 1890.[2]
Hill was placed on the Retired List at his own request on 9 August, 1897.
Hill was promoted to the rank of Rear-Admiral (retired) on 15 June, 1901, and to the rank of Vice-Admiral (retired) on 22 July, 1905.
