Willis Indicators were a family of electrical data instruments under development and trial in the late 1880s that could transmit and receive a variety of information, such as helm orders.
They were evaluated by the Royal Navy's torpedo training school Vernon along with several other slightly earlier data communication systems of which little is known.
Design and Evaluation
In 1889, Willis's Indicators were added to a list of electrical indicators that had been undergoing testing since the mid 1880s.[1] By 1891, only Lloyd's and Willis's instruments remained under trial,[2] a process that extended into 1892[3]
I have not located much specific information about Willis's devices, but they are likely quite similar to their competition.
