Commander R.N.R. (retired) William Stanley Nelson, D.S.C., (9 March, 1883 – ) was an officer in the Royal Naval Reserve.

Life & Career

Nelson served as Third and Second Mate with the Royal Mail Steam Packet Service between 1910-1913, and then as Second Officer and being in charge of 4-in guns in Darro for the Imperial Direct Line until 22 October, 1914, having been promoted to the rank of Lieutenant R.N.R. on 27 February, 1914. He was called out for naval service on 30 October and sent to Devonport. In late November, he was appointed to join the armed merchant cruiser Cedric. While in her, he impressed Captain Benson with his duties as Watchkeeper and Officer of quarters, as well as when overseeing armed boarding parties.[1]

Awarded D.S.C. for services rendered aboard Mallard on 4 May, 1917.

Acting Lieutenant-Commander, R.N.R. Nelson was appointed in command of the gunboat Foxhound on 25 March, 1918.[2]

Post-War

Nelson was promoted to the rank of Acting Lieutenant-Commander R.N.R. on 31 December, 1918.

Demobilised on 1 June, 1919.

Nelson was promoted to the rank of Lieutenant-Commander R.N.R. on 27 February, 1922 and retired on 7 July 1922 on account of non-service.

Nelson was promoted to the rank of Commander R.N.R. (retired) on 27 February, 1924.

World War II

Appointed to Pyramus as N.C.S., Kirkwall on 20 December, 1939.
