Captain (retired) William Nevill England (6 September, 1872 – 2 February, 1929) was an officer in the Royal Navy.

Life & Career

England was promoted to the rank of Lieutenant on 14 May, 1893.[1]

In August 1896, Rear-Admiral Rawson praised him for his conduct in bombarding Zanzibar.[2]

England was married 14 April, 1898.[3]

England was appointed in command of the destroyer Teazer on 1 March, 1899.[4][5]

England was promoted to the rank of Commander on 31 December, 1904.[6]

While appointed in command of the destroyer Teviot, England was found to be responsible for a slight collision with S.Y. Onora and to have contributed to a collision between Mermaid and Ribble. Soon thereafter, England complained over not being given command of a flotilla. Admiral Winsloe responded that he did not consider England suitable for such a command, and furthermore pulled England from command of Teviot! On 10 April, 1906, England was appointed to the Diadem Class first class protected cruiser Niobe.[7]

Appointed to Leviathan as commander on 31 March, 1908, the ship received favourable inspection reports, but England was admitted to Plymouth Hospital on 22 February, 1909, suffering from neurasthenia. He emerged, fit, on 5 May.[8]

On 30 November, 1912, England was appointed to work with the Lymington Coast Guard.

Great War

On 1 August, 1914, England's was lent to Portland Naval Centre from his Coast Guard posting.[9]

England was appointed in command of the triple screw steamer H.M.S. Ambitious on 3 July, 1918. His appointment ended on 25 March, 1919.[10] England was promoted to the rank of Captain as he was placed on the Retired List as medically unfit on 26 August, 1919.[11]
