Vice-Admiral William Nathan Wrighte Hewett, V.C., K.C.B., K.C.S.I., R.N. (12 May, 1834 – 13 May, 1888) served in the Royal Navy.

Life & Career

Hewett was promoted to the rank of Captain on 24 November, 1862.

Commanded paddle sloop Basilisk from 15 September, 1865 to 22 May, 1872, being Flag Captain on the China Station from 5 November, 1869.[1]

On 18 September 1875, it was noted that he had served in command of a "successful expedition up the Congo when many piratical villages and stores were destroyed."[2]

In December, 1876, he assisted troops at the wreck of the St. Lawrence.[3]

Hewett was promoted to the rank of Rear-Admiral on 21 March, 1878.

Hewett was promoted to the rank of Vice-Admiral on 8 July, 1884. He died at Haslar Hospital of Bright's Disease, very soon after ceding command of the Channel Squadron.
