William Irwin Moore
Captain (retired) William Irwin Moore (12 June, 1844 – 19 February, 1916) served in the United States Navy.
Life & Career
William I. Moore was born in Virginia (later West Virginia) and was appointed to the Naval Academy from the same state, graduating with the Class of 1866.[1]
He was was promoted to the rank of Ensign on 12 March, 1868, to the rank of Lieutenant on 21 March, 1870, to the rank of Lieutenant Commander on 31 October, 1888, and to the rank of Commander on 18 November, 1896.[2]
Moore's early assignments included command of two Coast Survey steamers, Ready from 1877 to 1878, and Patterson from January 1892 to March 1895.[3]
In 1897 Moore was appointed as Equipment Officer at the Boston Navy Yard.[4] He was still in this position the next year when, during the Spanish-American War, he was appointed as the first commanding officer of collier Leonidas.[5] By January, 1899 he was in command of collier Abarenda, retaining command until March of that year.[6][7]
His final service was at the Naval Station Port Royal in South Carolina.[8] Moore applied for voluntary retirement under Section 8 of the Act of March 3, 1899 and was placed on the Retired List on 30 June, 1900, being promoted to the rank of Captain as of that same date.[9]
Moore died in Morgantown, West Virginia, in February 1916.
