Admiral SIR William Fane de Salis, K.B.E., M.V.O., Royal Navy, Retired (21 July, 1858 – 23 January, 1939) was an officer of the Royal Navy.
Contents
Life & Career
De Salis was promoted to the rank of Lieutenant on 30 June, 1882.[1]
De Salis was promoted to the rank of Commander on 30 June, 1895, at the age of thirty-six years, eleven months, and nine days.[2]
Captain
De Salis was promoted to the rank of Captain on 30 June, 1901.[3] On 5 September, 1902, De Salis was appointed to the Orion for torpedo boats in the Mediterranean.[4]
De Salis was appointed to the second class protected cruiser Juno on 26 January, 1904.[5]
He was appointed command of the battleship Revenge on 1 September, 1905.[6]
He was appointed command of the battleship Jupiter on 16 August, 1906.[7]
On 22 June, 1909, De Salis was appointed a Naval Aide-de-Camp to King Edward VII, vice King-Hall.[8]
This was followed by an appointment to command Russell in July 1909, a posting which was to last until March 1911.[9]
Flag Rank
De Salis was promoted to the rank of Rear-Admiral on 10 February, 1911, vice Denison.[10] In accordance with the provisions of the Order in Council of 8 December, 1903, De Salis was placed on the Retired List, at his own request, on 2 March, 1913.[11]
Great War
On 6 March, 1915, De Salis was granted a temporary Commission as a Captain in the Royal Naval Reserve.[12]
He was advanced to the rank of Vice-Admiral on the Retired List on 9 June, 1916.[13]
Post-War
De Salis was advanced to the rank of Admiral on the Retired List on 1 January, 1919.[14]
He was knighted and appointed a Knight Commander in the Military Division of the Most Excellent Order of the British Empire (K.B.E.) dated 30 December, 1922.[15]
De Salis was promoted to the rank of Vice-Admiral on the Retired List on 31 July, 1924.[16]
